Life as we know it

Moral Police it seems…What the eff?

Posted by: wasshappening on: January 30, 2009

What  happened in Mangalore is outrageous.How can some group of men barge into a pub,drag women,pull them by their hair,almost strip off their clothes call themselves Cultural activists?What culture are they talking about? Hitting women the way they have? If pub culture is not acceptable in India then why dint they display their power by hitting the men in the pub.Why only women?

The blame game has already begun.The entire issue has been politicized.Sri Ram Sena doesn’t have to decide how women should behave.They are not here to decide what women should wear or what they shouldn’t.They are not Gods to decide what women should drink or eat.If they want to do something for our country let them do it by cleaning garbage in the city.Help the poor.Work towards women empowerment and for god sake stop assassinating any woman’s character. Drinking alcohol is  injurious..Its not good for both men and women right? What about the cheap alcohol that is available in all slums of India. Why are they not banned? How can we forget Hooch tragedy .And its needless to mention what politicians do to get their votes from Indian villagers.Why cant Moral police do something against it?Targeting westernization isn’t the need of the hour. Now,we have to take permission from the moral police to celebrate valentine’s day as it is against our culture.They are going to attack anything that does not conform to their idea of purity or morality.Today they have barged into the pubs,tomorrow they will barge into our houses to tell us what books we have to read ,what we have to eat or what we have to watch.The sensitive moral police will attack anyone who goes against their notion of morality.The fanatics in the name of religion and sex will beat up anybody who embraces westernization.

Supporting Moral police is nothing but supporting goondaism…

The video that made all the news shows Cruelty at its best:

(Wonder how media covered this!!?)

That video is incredibly disturbing. The curbing of human rights is very troubling, and we must hope and work towards stopping it.

Ugh! This is completely crazy.

you should probably take a look at the latest news. The people who are supposed to enforce women rights in this country ( The National Commission for Women) has come out with a pretty startling statement:). The NCW cheif — Mrs. Venkatesh – today announced that the whole issue was because of the pub owner, since there was not enuf security . Well, its one thing to say that the security was lax. however, she goes on to give the mob a clean chit — saying — they’re repenting what they did and wht not :) there is something seriously wrong with this country:(

@matthias
i totally agree with you…

@DOMINO

its driving the entire country crazy…

@Prashant Issac

i saw this being aired on Times Now…it completely enraged me.how can NCW talk something like tis…

There are so many such incidents which keep happening in our country….Shiv Sena and Sri Ram Sena have made a mockery of our country’s freedom of speech and expression….its really very disturbing!

But the big question is…..can we REALLY do something abt it?

And now those guys are out on bail. I’m no expert on law, but can any arrested criminal just hand over a few thousand and get back to doing what he was arrested for. I can’t believe the judiciary here, its the law and or should I say the lack of it that breeds such creatures in our society. I was shocked by their statements on TV when they were getting out of jail ” We’ll do this again if the need arises”, and the pride with which those words were uttered.

How is all this going to be stopped. We aren’t getting any help here. For all you know, my guess is that 4 yrs from now it will be the Ram Sena ruling Karnataka with the BJP.

Why don’t we all brainstorm and come up with a way of dealing with this. No one tells me what is my culture and what needs to be preserved. Or preach about ” PUB CULTURE” and the virtues that should be followed. This disgusting species ,worse than the Taliban, needs to be stopped

@nikhil

We need to police the moral police.Something has to be done b4 the situation gets worse…

@Tushar
First of all thanks for dropping in…Secondly,thanks for pasting your views here.What the “Cultural activists” have done is ridiculous…we badly need help…

There is no help coming lady. Get this and get this straight. Start keeping a pepper spray in your bag. Do you really think the government is going to help us on this one? No they won’t.

Its all the more appalling and frustrating thing that the news is not only politicized but I think the media encouraged it. Media knew about it, rushed to the spot to cover it but didn’t inform the police? WTF WTF WTF…

They think they can just do all this atrocity and get away with it. How different is this from Taliban who put such curbs the independence of women?

They have been termed the “Indian Taliban” what made me more angry is the fact that the Ram Sena chief said “The media made this issue big and helped us !” why is the media being so irresponsible ! It’s terrible ..I’m actually pretty scared to go out now after this incident!

“MORAL POLICE”
What morals ??
What about the Ancient moral of never to lift hand on a female??.
what about treating every female as your own mother or sister??
Ya i know their parents will be proud of them!!for informing the world about the TALIBAN morals.
What ever you say people I feel that the sole pourpose of this act was never MORALs but POLITICS, these people wanted to establish them selfs. come on who in the world knew about this group before this ?? And after getting out of the charges .. they have establised there FEAR ,and POWER ,and dominance.
They are famous now..!!
They Won .
Its such a shame for our country where every one else is trying to potray India as a Secular,Cosmoplitian,free country , where everyone is safe and guests are treated as GODS.

@Amit
Well said!…I liked your kalyug’s ramsena…

@raghu
seriously…WTF….
Point to be noted-Media always covers such things without informing the police…

@Meg
Even i am pretty scared to go out after this incidence…So the INDIAN TALIBAN has won!

@Adi
Thanks for your comments…
“What about the Ancient moral of never to lift hand on a female??. “…
I agree with u everywhere…This act was done for POLITICS and not morals…

I live at such a place :( I felt worse when I heard the media was informed before hand to cover it and they dint even bother to inform the police or take any other measures… They let it just happen… That’s terrible…

@nithin
thanks for dropping in…
keep visiting..:)

Hello everybody…
I like the way that you ppl r treating these senas. But in some aspects I do support them. The way that they have handled the ppl in pub is ridiculous. I agree with you. But the place that they have targetted is correct. I too oppose this pub culture the way they hate it. A girl will go to the pub and will dance with any colleague or friend who is there with her parts touching him? Don’t you think it is against our culture?

now, an easy way to marry ur valentine – jus get caught by the SRS’s Moral police on Valentine’s Day. They’ll marry you off… :P

then u would defenetly enjoy ,if ur mother goes to a pub and dance withe other men..isn’t??

don’t u think that pub is the best place for supplying drugs?u r saying about women rights..do u believe that all are seeing women in a respectful maner in pubs?? i want answer.

@su

LOL…
On a serious note whats wrong with celebrating Valentine’s day?making such a fuss about it sounds sooo funny….

@su
Yeah! Its a easy way. I’m thinking of doin the same.
Because my gal is not willing to come out with me. Take her out somehow on the 14th, get caught by the MORAL POLICE,get married. STORY CLOSE.

Seriously,if somethin lik that happens on 14th,then that will be the worst day blore will have had.

These people are positively insane but what scares me is this — go to any of the online news articles pertaining to these incidents, you’ll find comments that are FOR what these people are doing. There are people out there who actually believe in this craziness.

I was scouring the blogosphere and came across this — http://churumuri.wordpress.com/2009/02/07/a-lifetime-achievement-award-for-lk-advani/#comment-98025.

Now the fact that the award was given to a Hindu fundamentalist is shocking enough, but the responses from people in support of this is scary. If such people had their way our country is all set to have a Hindu Taliban rule.

@oly
:)

@Adithya
I am getting too many comments who are FOR these insane people(but i am not approving them)…The activists have too many followers…They are treated as heroes for some reason now…We need some God to save our country now…The govt is not doing anything…no action is being taken…All women are literally scared to do what they want to do…Freedom of speech and expression is in a way being curbed for all of us…In the name of culture only women are targetted…Why not men?

Such people are lunatics and at present our country seems to be filled with them. I know women are being targeted but I think I know why this might be the case. The whole idea of a modern day woman who goes to pubs, celebrates valentine’s day, dresses in jeans is alien to these people. It goes against the lunatics’ Vedic Age view of women being subservient and almost slave-like. I can’t imagine what would happen if these people came to power, we’d probably end up in the stone age.

BTW — 2 things — I updated my blog :) — and I think you should post some of the lunatics’ responses because if anything it makes for entertaining reading (even if disturbing)

U want GOD to save u? stay at home. or get hooked up with any top brass’ son. should any nuisance happen, they’re into trouble. if all is well, then ur life is settled ;) dont mind me much. it was said in a lighter vein! :D

[...] think alike.Different people have different opinions.The following are two comments to my post -Moral Police it seems…what the eff? .I was apprehensive about accepting them.But after giving a lot of thought i decided to make all my [...]

This sort of makes me laugh. I’m watching a nation that has risen to economic prominence by feeding off America’s desire for cheap labor being torn apart by their inundation by American culture – or what passes for it.

As an American, this makes me smile just a little bit, since I miss those jobs that used to be in America and are now in India.

Your Morality Police are trying to do thing right thing. They’re trying to save your culture from rampant, uncontrolled Westernization. They’re going about it in piss poor way though.

I guess Americans have a habit of poking their noses in everyone’s affairs….

Yep, we do, Nick. It the price the world pays for riding America’s coat tails.

Or, more importantly and less sarcastically, everyone’s affair are America business because what happens anywhere our business interests are located affects us.

@jonolon
Its not the debate about America or India.We are not even blaming American culture here.We are generally talking about moral policing-how they are misusing rights of freedom of expression at the cost of demeaning women(in general). Everybody here is okay with westernization in a way that we limit ourselves.We don need moral policing or anybody else to tell us what an individual has to do.

Sorry, wasshappening, but I’ve traveled a lot around the globe and have seen this before in many countries.

You don’t believe that you need the morality police to tell you what an individual can and cannot do. OK. But what were the cultural norms before the westernization began?

Is this solely an attempt to enforce morality, or is it a reaction to the rapid “corruption” of Indian culture by Western influences?

Of course there’s also the question of whether some parts of traditional Indian culture and societal mores should be maintained or not…

@jonolan

are you trying to hint that we would end up like some of the
Confused so called nations !

I think you are just venting your anger wrt to the cheap labor/recession phenomenon ….Time to rethink

The worst part was abt the valentine day fuss. Who t hell told tat love cant be celebrated? N target couples who hold hands? preposterous.

@meg
:)

@jonolan
Have you seen the video?! Check it out if you havent.Its outrageous to see how some illiterate people treat women in the name of religion and sex.You will then understand what exactly the moral police are upto…

@sri
Valentines day issue turned out to be laughing stock!
